Showcase 8

The driveway and entrance to this garden were designed to compliment the established gardens directly around the house adding unity throughout the property.  Parts of the driveway were already lined with an established box hedge (Buxus microphylla var. japonica) . Therefore, this was the ideal option to replace the agapanthus that once lined the long entrance driveway.

A brick drain was designed and constructed around the edges of the driveway to remove surface run-off of water. Whilst being functional the drain helps to define the edges of the driveway and links the entrance of the driveway to the garden.

The driveway entrance is paved in a herringbone pattern using seconds brick. The edges curve and splay out towards the road to allow vehicles a wider turning path on entering the driveway. The wider entrance gives a sense of presence and is in proportion to the large front boundary of the property.

The design as a whole has given the garden and property a sense of grandeur, and on entering the property the eyes of the visitor are led directly to the existing turning circle and front entrance of the house. The removal of the agapanthus has opened up the garden, whilst the newly planted box hedge has provided the formality that the entrance lacked.
