Showcase 4
The main criteria for creating this smaller garden were to provide a garden that is low in maintenance and water consumption. The garden was to provide year round interest, particularly in the front garden. The design needed to bring elements of a cottage style garden into the front and also provide shelter from the northern sun, whilst maintaining good levels of light to the house. The rear garden was to be dog proof and consist mainly of native plants to blend into the bushland backdrop.
The design fused the informal styles of a native and cottage garden together, adding to this, a few elements of a typical woodland garden that compliment the other styles i.e. Birches (Betula sp). These deciduous birches were used for their narrow and upright form (ideal for small spaces) to provide shelter to the house from the heat of the summer sun, whilst allowing sunlight through in the cool winters.
The sandstone and river pebbles used for the informal paths unite the front garden (predominately exotic plants) with the rear native garden, as both materials compliment each style. The sandstone contrasts well with the dark colours found in the hardwood timber deck, gates and steps.
Wisteria and climbing roses will provide a feast for the senses when exploring under the pergola. The delicate scent of the Winter Daphne (Daphne odora) will follow visitors in through the front door.
In the rear garden, stunning display of flowers will be seen amongst the native grasses – selected to withstand the forces of a playful dog. The bright red flowers of the Waratah (Telopea speciosissima), and the yellow from the Kangaroo Paw are complimented by the delicate purple flower of Scaevola aemula. The grey-green foliage gives Westringia its soft appearance, which contrasts well with the bold green strap-like leaves of Lomandra ‘Tanika’ and Dianella caerulea.
